With the accelerating digitalization of society, the significance of data and the expectations for its effective use have become increasingly pronounced in both professional and research contexts. Consequently, a set of fundamental competencies is required: the ability to collect and analyze data in accordance with specific objectives, to interpret results with accuracy, and to apply them appropriately in addressing real-world problems.

Within the framework of the Japan Statistical Society Certificate, the Japan Statistical Society and the Japanese Association for Promoting Quality Assurance in Statistics administer three levels of certification: Data Science, Basic Analytics (DS Basic Analytics), Data Science, Advanced (DS Advanced), and Data Science, Expert (DS Expert). These examinations are designed to evaluate and certify data science professionals in accordance with international guidelines, model curricula, and the national educational standards.

Building upon DS Advanced, the DS Expert examination serves to evaluate advanced, university-level expertise in data science through computer-based testing (CBT). Its content is aligned with the skill sets (Second Edition) and the model curriculum (Intermediate Level) published by Japan Inter-University Consortium for Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Education. The examination assesses both mastery of statistics, mathematics, computation, and modeling, and the integrative capacity to apply these domains of knowledge to complex problem solving. The test comprises nine major questions, each subdivided into four sub-questions.

This volume has been prepared as the official text covering the scope of the DS Expert examination. Emphasizing the practical integration of knowledge in mathematics, statistics, and information science, it is organized around a wide range of worked examples. By engaging with these problems and their explanations, readers can prepare systematically for the examination. The book consists of seven chapters and an appendix: Chapters 2–5 address foundational topics, Chapter 6 presents worked problems with solutions and explanatory pathways, and Chapter 7 offers a full-length mock examination reflecting the format and structure of the DS Expert examination.

Through diligent study of this text, readers will acquire a comprehensive body of knowledge, ethical perspectives, and integrative skills indispensable to the practice of data science. Accordingly, the book serves not only as an effective preparation tool for the DS Expert examination, but also as a foundation for developing into expert-level professionals capable of making substantive contributions in society.
